The Gift!!

I remember when I was a kid I used to wait for my birthday every year. It used be the best day of the year where almost all of my wishes used to be taken care of and I would get a Gift too.

Sometimes I used to get gift of my choice, sometimes I didn’t, and there were few occasions when I didn’t receive anything at all.

I used to be very angry, very disappointed. What is this? I am doing everything they want me to do and they can’t get me a small gift on my birthday. I won’t listen to them thereafter, nor will I study. Leaving the food was the best way of blackmailing, I am sure many of us would have tried this with our parents. But here again, we are not lucky to hit jackpot all the time. Sometimes it backfires and we get hit in return as well.

From next day, same routine would continue again and I would do everything asked of me to get a gift of my choice. Study well, eat well, speak well, dress well, behave well and sometimes they would go too far like think well. Now that was too much to do for getting a gift once or twice a year, but I would try to do whatever I could as if I was doing them a favour by doing so.

Now so many years have passed for those silly tantrums, for those illogical demands and blackmailing. I, like most of us, am working for my bread and butter now and when I realize what my parents have gifted me over the years, I have nothing but gratitude for them.

They have gifted me an education I can be proud of. They have gifted me a personality, an upbringing which is helping me to survive in this world with my chin up. They have gifted me a character, which is helping me to move ahead continuously in this ever competitive world without compromising with my conscience. More than anything else, they have gifted me a life which is still a dream for more than a billion of people in this world.

And now when I think of the gifts I have received for my entire life, the gifts for which I used to create trouble for my parents seem worthless.

I feel blessed. I am sure all of you would also agree with me. What say?
