Winning against all Odds takes something more than Courage!!

The other day, I was listening to the interview of Darren Sammy, Captain of West Indies Cricket team, winner of recently concluded T20 Cricket world cup. West Indies had reached the final after defeating the tournament favourites, team India. Even after that when it came about supporting a team in the finals, most of the Indians were supporting West Indies. They are one of the very few teams who are respected and loved in every part of the world and it is very strange considering the rivalry that teams carry in this competitive world. What makes people do that? What makes fans of other countries supporting a team which is struggling to find its past glory? Answer lied in that interview which Sammy gave after their historic win over England.

By now almost every cricket fan knows about the conditions in which West Indies cricketers played. But, did we feel it when they were playing? I don't think so. Their commitment was at par with any other team in the tournament. The happiness and joy which they carried on their face was hardly reflecting the situations they were in. They were even defeated by a minnow like Afghanistan. Did that dampen their spirits? Ask Indian Cricket team and any Indian Cricket fan, they would be better to answer this question.

The West Indies team had once again proved so many things which we don't see in the celebrations of a success, a win. They had shown the world how it is done, if you want to make it big in any field in your life.

1) They were on a mission, they had come with a decision to win the cup and they did everything to fulfill the promise they had made with themselves.

2) Their own people didn't support them, they were humiliated but did they feel down? If you have seen Gayle dancing with Afghanistan players after their match, you would know it.

3) They had so many reasons to quit when they were down but they didn't. They had all the reasons to point fingers when they won, but they didn't. Sammy's interview was not about cribbing; it was all about telling the world that if you want to do something then it’s you who decide what is to be done, not others.

4) Most important one, the team had only one big star, a Hero in them, The GAYLE. He never fired except the first match and after that, there was a new Hero after every match for them. The reason was very simple; they believed that they were Heroes. They knew that everything is possible when we have a Team and boy, they had a Team.

Few of the players didn’t even know that whether they would ever play again for their country but they gave their 100%. They lived in the moment, they believed that they can and they have done it.

I, one of the die-hard fans of Indian Cricket, feel proud now that our team was defeated by a team with a bigger purpose. What do you say?
